Primary dealer positions
What the primary dealers, the banks that trade directly with the Federal Reserve, hold on their books. These are weekly net outright positions by asset class from the New York Fed (FR2004). A position can be net long or net short. We surface this as the closest public proxy for dealer positioning; it is not prime-brokerage desk data, and it is context, not a market call.

What this is, and what it is not
Primary dealers are the roughly two dozen banks and broker-dealers that trade US government securities directly with the New York Fed. Each week they report their net outright positions (long holdings minus short holdings) by asset class on form FR2004. A positive value means dealers are net long that asset; a negative value means net short. It is one of the few public windows into how the largest dealing desks are positioned.
We surface this as a public dealer-positioning proxy because real prime-brokerage positioning data is proprietary and not lawfully available. This is NOT prime-brokerage desk data, and it is not a buy or sell signal. It is one slow-moving piece of positioning context.
