The overall sentiment has moved slightly more negative compared to the previous day, and confidence in this assessment is high. This stance is occurring alongside a backdrop of weak growth and reduced appetite for risk.

Macro Regime

  • The risk-off reading is driven primarily by the growth factor, which is the most negative contributor, followed closely by risk appetite.
  • Liquidity (the ease of buying or selling assets) and volatility (price fluctuations) are also negative, though less extreme.
  • The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) flags systemic risk as elevated for Australia, Brazil, Canada, and France. Their debt-service ratios are 20%, 29%, 25% and 21% respectively, reinforcing the negative macro tilt.
  • The disconnect between risk appetite and liquidity suggests that risk appetite is deteriorating independently of liquidity conditions.
  • A notable outflow of 1,273 BTC, valued at $102 million, moved from the exchange OKX to an unidentified large holder (“whale”) while Bitcoin trades down 1.68% at $79,728.
  • Executive changes have been reported at ALCE, NIXX, RICK, TCPC and SOUN. Each change is flagged as critical with a full multiplier, adding a specific governance risk for those companies.

Market Context

  • The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is 4.77% and the 2-year yield is 4.34%, giving a yield-curve slope of +43 basis points (a basis point is one-hundredth of a percent).
  • The 10-year breakeven inflation rate, which reflects market expectations for inflation, is 2.35%.
  • The 30-year mortgage rate is 6.71%.
  • High-yield (below-investment-grade) option-adjusted spread is 265 basis points; investment-grade spread is 81 basis points. These spreads measure the extra yield investors require to hold riskier bonds.
  • The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet totals $6,737,204 million. The reverse-repo facility, used to manage short-term liquidity, holds $0.675 trillion.
  • Initial jobless claims, a weekly measure of new unemployment filings, stand at 206,000.
  • The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index is 55.20, indicating current consumer confidence.
  • Cryptocurrency prices: Bitcoin is $79,728, down 1.68% over the past 24 hours; Ethereum is $2,459, down 2.72%; Solana is $102.72, down 1.44%.

Watch

  • No high-impact or critical macroeconomic releases are scheduled in the next 48 hours.

Correction (Phase 623, 2026-09-27): this note gave the Federal Reserve's overnight reverse repo (ON RRP) usage as $0.675 trillion. The source series, FRED RRPONTSYD, is published in billions of dollars, so the correct figure for this date is $675 million. The stated figure was 1,000 times too large.
